Slightly refined version using a couple of table mats, she hasnt spotted their missing yet:grin:

When its running select the bph and lift deg for the movement, then hit the boost up button (center right) to get the wave form up to readable size, Beat error, anplitude and s/d are displayed in the top left, loads more useful info bottom left There will be a sample playing, click the run button in the top left to stop it, then select file then choose waveform file, youll need to remember where you put it.

Next i launch "E-timer", this software takes some getting the knack of, but basically you'll get error messages, just click OK and carry on. So click file, then Export, and export the file as wav to somewhere you'll find it easily, the desktop in my case You can work out the beats per second and maybe miss beats from this but its hard work.

Now to record the watch using a free version of Audacity. You will have to remove the back cover, but you'd have to to regulate it anyway

With the transducer plugged into the mini amp, and the mini amp plugged into the PC sound card, i could hear the watch beating away. Blowed if i was going to risk a Seiko becoming magnetic or worse bursting into flames. So a trip down to Maplins and i came back home with a 4.2cm dia Ceramic piezzo Transducer which cost £1.69 and a mini amplifier for guitars found an old PC mic and cut the mic off then soldered the lead to the transducer, stuck the transducer down onto a graphics tablet with a bit of tape and placed a fake Breitling onto it. Trying to work out beat errors etc was too much like hard work, and amplitude was impossible, well for me anyway. Ive dabbled around before using I phone apps and then PC audio software and microphones but it was all a bit hit and miss, avoiding back ground noise and Standard warning about any device that tests mechanical watches - if you are even a tiny bit OCD, you may never be happy again after checking what you thought was a fanastically well running watch. In a nut shell im tight, i know i need a timegrapher but im buggered if im going to shell out and buy one, so i decided to build one myself. Wouldn't be easy to use for regulation without a proper timing machine type mic. That may be because the granularity of the display or the software in the timing machine hides tiny errors, (a computer screen has much finer resolution) or possibly the fact that this software is sharing resources with the rest of the PC is going to introduce some variations.Īnyway - dead cheap and worth a try. I have a cheap-end timegrapher, and the results are pretty darn close, although a watch that is dead straight on a timing machine, can look a tiny bit wobbly on the software. Needs the PC to be calibrated against a known accurate quartz watch - has a facility to do that. Shows: running SPD, amplitude (need to set the lift angle) beat error, and unlike the cheaper timegrapher machines, also a visual of the movement waveform - like an escapement analyser.
#Watch o scope download for windows
Tg 0.5.0 available as a free download for Windows (maybe other OS too, not sure)Īdd a clip-on guitar pickup microphone (remove the foam pad) very very cheap from ebay or similar. When you are happy, clean the o-ring groove, and put a very small amount of silicone grease on the o-ring and reinstall the back.ĭo not be obsessive - do this once and don't keep opening and readjusting. Be careful - you could cause expensive repairs quite easily.Ĭheck the timekeeping in several positions and adjust accordingly. If it has a free sprung balance with microstella screws you are in a different level of skill but if you want to proceed buy an inexpensive tool to do so on eBay.

If the watch doesn't have a free sprung balance but rather a screw or levers to adjust timekeeping, again consult youtube on how to proceed. Buy one of the cheap sets of Rolex back removal tools. If you want to proceed, buy a cheap Chinese Timegrapher and watch a youtube video on its use. Second, do not open a watch under warranty. First, I would not worry about getting a Timegrapher etc.unless you are handy at dealing with delicate items and are willing to regulate the timekeeping yourself.
